How To Rid Yourself Of Limiting Beliefs

Updated: Nov 17, 2020

We are all born blank slates, and over the years, we absorb whatever information is presented to us. For the most part, we are decent at discerning what's to be held as truth versus what's just someone else's personal experience or formed opinions. However, there are times when a simple statement, usually made towards oneself during our formative years, creeps into our psych and we believe it to be the absolute truth no matter what.

Say you wanted to be the fastest runner when you were little, but you fall on the shorter side, so your parents or someone else you held at a high esteem tells you "You'll never be able to be the fastest runner! You're too short! Never going to happen!"

Ok, so there might be some logical truth to that statement, however, these kinds of statements entices our brains in creating Limiting Beliefs without even attempting whatever your heart and mind was set to. Now, envision if you would've ignored others' opinions on whether or not you could become the fastest runner, and tried anyway? Perhaps you wouldn't be Husain Bolt's most dangerous competition, but you could've forged a love for running, exercising, and could've run multiple marathons instead of just sprinting, and overall could've achieved something other than the limiting belief that you cannot.

When it comes to anything in life, we're often plagued with our own limiting beliefs or personal road blocks, and I want to tell you that: You're not as stuck as you think you are!

You Can loose weight, You Do have self control, You Can pursue that career, You Can find love after a heartbreak, You Are good, You Are loved!

For the time being, retraining your brain to believe in yourself might take some work and time, but it's so worth investing on.

A simple exercise I love to do and highly recommend is to create a list (can be on phone, computer, planner) of positive affirmations. Every morning upon waking up, before browsing for useless things, read that list to yourself.

The list should look somewhat like this:

  • I am strong

  • I am loved

  • I am an excellent coworker

  • I am successful

Rewire your brain to believe in yourself, because there's infinite potential on what you're capable of doing if you just believe you can and work towards your goals!

Now go make that list, rid yourself of all your personal road blocks, and go make your dreams come true because You Can!
